Welcome Letter

Dear Attorneys, Witnesses, and Sponsoring Coaches,

It is my utmost honour to invite you to join us at the Vancouver Mock Trial 2019. Vancouver Mock Trial (VMT) is one of the premier Mock Trial tournaments in North America. Established by high school students and for high school students, it seeks to inspire thoughtful, engaged citizens of our generation.

Through the two-day event, participants at VMT will be immersed in a dynamic environment, working together to tackle a complicated legal case through logical reasoning, critical thinking, and argument building. Vancouver Mock Trial empowers students to be civically and legally aware and develop analyzing skills that are fundamental to the increasingly complex world. This year, the conference will be held during the first weekend of April (April 6 & April 7) at St. George’s School, Vancouver.

The founding principle of VMT is to provide delegates with an intellectually stimulating, engaging, and informative simulation of the real-world trial process. Mock Trial promotes passionate discourse vis-à-vis landmark cases, human rights concerns, or even the legal systems themselves, allowing delegates to delve into a wide spectrum of prominent legal issues.

I would like to specifically acknowledge the academic support from Max Wang, the director of academics and the founder of Peer Potential Mock Trial. This conference could not happen without his support and guidance on VMT Procedural Guide, Rules of Evidence, and Delegate Handbook. I would also like to acknowledge that our case, People of the State of Illinois v. Taylor Cartwright, has been provided by the Illinois State Bar Association. This case cannot be distributed any other purpose except for the use of preparing for Vancouver Mock Trial 2019, and all intellectual rights and copyright is reserved to the Illinois State Bar Association.

VMT has a Secretariat Team of diverse talents and backgrounds, encompassing coaches from the Mock Trial national team of China to international Mock Trial competition medalists. We are proud to have Secretariat members joining us from Vancouver, Beijing, Victoria, and San José. Over the past months, the VMT team has worked hard in ensuring the best tournament experience for our prospective delegates, and we are thrilled to share some of our efforts with you. We are committed to expanding the diversity of our delegate pool, optimizing our cases, and technical systems to provide the best possible delegate experience. Inviting schools across British Columbia, we strive to make multiculturalism one of our tournament’s defining values.

Dedicated to providing a professional, exciting and educational mock trial experience accessible to prospective delegates with any level of familiarity with the format, the tournament will give a novice training session prior to the main rounds. We are confident that the training will enable every individual delegate to perform to the best of their abilities.

On behalf of the Secretariat Team, we sincerely hope that you will join us at VMT 2019. We look forward to seeing you this April!

Best wishes,

Ronald Wu, Secretary-general
